According to the World Health Organisation, 1 in 4 people will deal with a mental health condition at some point in their life.

Samaritans, a UK organisation with global affiliation, have been listening for 65 years, and now have more than 20,000 volunteers across the UK and Ireland, answering 5 million calls every year.

Samaritans was founded in 1953 by vicar Chad Varah, who wanted to offer a listening service to anyone who was struggling and contemplating suicide. There are now more than 20,000 Samaritans volunteers in 201 centres across the UK and Ireland, taking calls, emails and text messages from people who need to talk about what they're going through. The charity also works with schools, local communities, prisons and hospitals to provide emotional support to those who need it. They work closely with researchers and campaigners to continually raise awareness and improve mental health services in the UK and Ireland.

Excellent, thought provoking read!

This is a fantastic book, chucked nicely so you can read a few pages at a time and some great pointers and advice from volunteers and people who have experienced the need to have an ear to listen to them. It’s really made me think about how effective a listener I am and made me listen and talk in a whole new way.

It’s also made me realise how much I need someone who can just listen... makes me want to be a part of creating a world of better listeners...

Empowering and enabling

Even before reading this book to the end I can recommend it. Easy to read. Every chapter and section so far has gems of insight, common sense and the encouragement that each one of us ordinary/extraordinary people is able, just by using simple listening suggestions, to make a difference. Imagine if we became a nation of listeners one to another.....

A great read
