According to the World Health Organisation, 1 in 4 people will deal with a mental health condition at some point in their life.

Samaritans, a UK organisation with global affiliation, have been listening for 65 years, and now have more than 20,000 volunteers across the UK and Ireland, answering 5 million calls every year.

Samaritans was founded in 1953 by vicar Chad Varah, who wanted to offer a listening service to anyone who was struggling and contemplating suicide. There are now more than 20,000 Samaritans volunteers in 201 centres across the UK and Ireland, taking calls, emails and text messages from people who need to talk about what they're going through. The charity also works with schools, local communities, prisons and hospitals to provide emotional support to those who need it. They work closely with researchers and campaigners to continually raise awareness and improve mental health services in the UK and Ireland.

A great read

It's an informative, great read and I've recommended it to family and friends, the book gives practical pointers towards being a good listener to help aid the other person to really feel able to talk and open up.

Simple, clear and helpful

This is a brilliant and important book, which I have already recommended to a friend. It gives practical, down-to-earth and realistic guidance on how to be a better listener. It offers reassurance that we are all capable of helping someone in need, and that we don't need to be perfect to make a real difference, whilst also challenging us to improve our skills. I'd give more than five stars if I could.
